016: How To Be Healthy In An Unhealthy World With Pilar Gerasimo

Why is being healthy so hard for 99% of the population???

It's the quintessential question for consumers and health practitioners alike, and this week's podcast guest Pilar Gerasimo (Founding Editor of Experience Life Magazine) has some compelling answers.

In fact, this interview had me excited since the day we recorded it last month – in part because it offers the clues why prospective patients are hesitant to schedule discovery calls with a healthcare provider.

While you might blame lack of willpower as the reason why it's so hard to be healthy, Pilar points out that our culture's most broadly accepted norms and social standards are constantly undermining your health and making you miserable.

So it's no wonder that when we're frazzled, fatigued, overwhelmed, sleep-deprived, and emotionally and physically depleted... the brain goes into self-protection mode to preserve whatever energy remains, thus sabotaging any good intentions to to be healthier.

Throughout our conversation, Pilar shared many of the core insights from her book "Healthy Deviant – A Rule Breaker's Guide to Be Healthy In An Unhealthy World"... which I highly recommend, it's been one of my favorite reads last year:

#1: Recognizing that the current systems (education system, media, industry & government) all disincentivize truly healthy behaviors...

... in essence making healthy behaviors comparatively difficult, expensive and inconvenient relative to mass consumer products and goods.

#2: Setting up your environments in ways that minimize friction, distraction and temptation so you can better maintain cognitive reserves and are predisposed toward desired actions and attitudes.
